JANA & JS
jana & js (Jana & Jean-Sébastien Philippe) have been an artist couple for over 20 years, creating work that belongs both in public spaces and on various mediums dedicated to exhibitions.
They compose their paintings from urban landscapes, architectural details, and figures whose attitudes and expressions are inspired by the locations where they are painted. The work of jana & js aims to integrate as seamlessly as possible into the sites of their interventions. They continually seek to establish a relationship between their paintings and the surrounding environment. With this in mind, they have spent the last few years exploring new mediums for their creations, sometimes venturing outside urban spaces (tree trunks, railway tracks, stones...).
They use stenciling as the foundation of their work, but over time, they have enriched it with other techniques that offer them greater freedom.
Passionate about photography, their pictorial work is based on their own photos. It is intended to be deeply personal, acting as a reflection of what surrounds them, what moves them, and what they witness — a practice, nourished by their encounters, travels, and daily life.
After meeting in Madrid in 2004, where they lived for a time, and spending a few years in Paris, they are now based in Germany (in Laufen), near the Austrian border.
